Mountain Brook Garage Door Repair and Replacement
More than half of Mountain Brook’s homes went up in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s, and some still have heavy wood garage doors. We fix those doors and the springs that lift them, and when a door is too far gone, we put in a new one.

Older Wood Doors and the Springs Behind Them
A solid-wood garage door is far heavier than most steel ones, and the springs carry nearly all of that weight. When a spring on a heavy door breaks, the door can come down hard. Don’t lift it, run the opener or try to wind the spring. Call us. We replace the spring, then check the cables and drums that share the load.
One of our Mountain Brook jobs was a 1960s solid-wood door with damaged window panels; it’s in the photos below. New doors we install are Amarr or Clopay, and the glass one in those photos is a Clopay Avante.
Signs an older door needs a look:
- The door feels heavier than it used to when you lift it
- Cracked, split or swollen wood panels
- Peeling paint or soft wood along the bottom edge
- Screws or hinges working loose from the wood
- An opener that labors to lift the door
- The door drops fast over the last foot instead of settling
If the door suddenly feels heavier, stop using it and call.
What We Repair and Install
Besides springs and new doors, here’s what we fix:
Broken Garage Door Springs
Broken or worn springs can make your garage door extremely heavy or prevent it from opening altogether. A loud bang, visible gap in the spring, or door that suddenly becomes difficult to lift can all point to a spring problem.
Garage Door Spring RepairGarage Door Opener Problems
If the opener runs but the door doesn’t move, the remote stops responding, or the door reverses unexpectedly, the opener or one of its connected components may need repair.
Garage Door Opener RepairBroken or Frayed Cables
Garage door cables work with the springs to safely lift and lower the door. A loose, frayed, or broken cable can cause the door to hang unevenly and should be repaired before the door is operated again.
Garage Door Cable RepairWorn Rollers & Damaged Tracks
Worn rollers, bent tracks, or loose hardware can cause the door to shake, grind, squeak, or move unevenly. Repairing these components can restore smoother and quieter operation.
Garage Door Track & Roller RepairGarage Doors Off Track
A door can come off its tracks because of damaged rollers, broken cables, impact, or another mechanical failure. An off-track door can be unstable, so it should be inspected before you try to move it.
Off-Track Garage Door RepairDamaged Garage Door Panel
Dents, cracks, or impact damage don’t always mean the entire garage door needs to be replaced. Depending on the damage, an individual panel may be repairable or replaceable.

Common Questions
Why is a broken spring on a wood door such a big deal?
Wood doors are heavy, and the springs do almost all of the lifting. With one broken, that weight falls on the opener or on whoever tries to lift the door. Don’t run the opener or lift the door; call (205) 907-8179.
What is a full-view glass door made of?
An aluminum frame with glass panels. The glass door in our Mountain Brook photos is a Clopay Avante; Amarr’s version is the Vista. We’ll go over the options and the price of each with you.
If we pick a lighter door, do the springs change?
Yes. Springs are picked for the weight of the door. Springs sized for a heavy wood door are far too strong for a lighter steel one, so a new door needs springs that match it.
